LUCILLE LONDON.png

A rare and romantic Belle Époque chimaera pendant, converted from an original 19th-century French brooch and dating to circa 1870.

At the centre sits a beautifully rendered chimaera (often interchangeably described as a griffin in antique jewellery), captured mid-breath as it exhales a plume of “smoke” in the form of a glowing old mine cut diamond. This poetic detail floats delicately within a crescent moon, itself haloed with shimmering rose-cut diamonds that catch the light with a soft, candlelit sparkle so characteristic of the period.

Crafted in rich 18ct gold with silver highlighting the crescent, a classic Belle Époque technique used to enhance diamond brilliance, the pendant showcases exceptional French workmanship. The original brooch bore a French eagle-head hallmark on the pin, which regrettably could not be preserved during the conversion, though its presence firmly supports the French origin and gold purity.  The silver element is stamped "725".

The crescent form is beautifully balanced and sculptural, with exquisite engraving and depth throughout, and the chimaera motif, symbolising protection, strength and guardianship, adds a layer of powerful, almost talismanic meaning. The old mine cut diamond “smoke” is particularly enchanting, appearing to hover in motion, full of life and intention.

The piece has been professionally converted with a substantial, modern 6.5mm chunky 18ct gold bail (approximately 1mm thick), allowing it to be worn effortlessly on antique or contemporary chains alike, while remaining sympathetic to the original jewel.

A true one-of-a-kind treasure: wearable history, rich in symbolism, romance and craftsmanship, and offered in exceptional condition.
